Romanized discovery directory

Japanese Names A–Z

Browse published Japanese given-name records by the first character of their reviewed romaji. Only letter groups with enough complete records are released as indexable pages.

Published threshold

A letter must currently contain at least ten reviewed names. The current release includes all seven collections that meet that threshold.

Exact name records

Every listed item links to an exact kanji-and-reading record with pronunciation, evidence boundaries, relationships, and field-level sources.

Romanization boundary

Latin initials are an English browsing aid, not Japanese alphabetical order. Kana and complete pronunciation remain authoritative on each record.

7 published first-letter collections

Counts are recalculated from the current publication-gated name dataset. Open a collection to compare every qualifying record.

Current dataset coverage

Muted letters have reviewed records but no indexable letter page in this batch. They remain discoverable in the complete first-name directory.

How to use first-letter lists

Start with a Latin initial when you need quick English-language discovery, then compare the complete hiragana readings. Names that share an initial may begin with different Japanese mora and should not be treated as sound-alikes.

Follow every candidate to its full record before interpreting kanji. Individual character glosses are not automatic whole-name translations, and one reading may have several separately evidenced written forms.
